PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR PHOTOS
Friday November 22, 2013
Dear Diary,
Today's entry is one based on a very personal experience. My photos were stolen off of a website where I had done an interview on plus size modeling and were used on several porn sites. These photos are attached to my full name and also had the photographers logo on them, but that didn't stop them. I am still working on having my photos removed. I was furious because I paid for these photos and they were used inappropriately.
Who knows how many times they were shared and re-blogged on these sites. Most of these sites have disclaimers stating that they do not authorize the use inappropriate and unauthorized use of photos, but I know that they aren't checking either.
As models we don't own the rights to our photos unless otherwise discussed with the photographer. First make sure you sign a model-photographer release form. Most photographers have them but as a model you should draw one up for your own protection. This protects you from the photographer selling your photos to such site with your name attached.
With social media and blogs we post out pics on our page, not knowing where they will end up. Facebook has changed so much that now people who aren't on your friends list can see your photos in their newsfeed if a mutual friends "likes" or "comments" on it. I belong to several facebook modeling groups as so thousands of other facebook users. Once you post your photo in the group every member can see it as well as anyone who shares it. These photos are now all over the web and can be screenshot and re-posted and shared on other social site, porn sites, escort sites and bought and sold everywhere.
You can now watermark your own photos. "There's an app for that". I use the 'PhotoMarkr' app. It allows you to create your own copyright tag for you photos on your phone before you post them. I now use this on all of my fashion and modeling photos before I send them to anyone or post them to social media. You want to place in where it cant be cropped out and re-used.
Protect yourself and your photos. Watermark/copyright your pics.
